Non-Candy Halloween Treats: Compare Cost per Child

SpartanShopper Editorial · October 16, 2026

Choose non-candy Halloween treats by age, pack count and cost per child. Plan for 25, 50 or 100 visitors without buying unnecessary extras.

Non-candy Halloween treats are easiest to choose when you set a budget per visitor before looking at party packs. Our starting point is simple: offer a paper-based choice such as stickers or an activity sheet, then add an age-labeled small toy only if it fits your visitors and budget. “Non-candy” describes a type of treat; it does not establish allergy suitability.

Calculate the cost for 25, 50 or 100 visitors

Use this calculation: packs needed = visitor count divided by usable handouts per pack, rounded up. Total spend is packs needed times the current pack price, plus delivery, tax and any supplies. Divide that total by expected visitors to see the cost of your actual plan, including leftovers.

Arithmetic example only: one handout per visitor, using packs of 24.
Expected visitors24-handout packs neededHandouts left over

50322
100520

For example, if a 24-handout pack costs $24, buying three packs for 50 visitors costs $72 before tax or shipping: $1.44 per expected visitor, although each purchased handout costs $1. This is a hypothetical budget, not a current product price. A slightly higher unit price in a better-sized pack can still reduce total spend.

One packaged option: Play-Doh party favors

The Play-Doh 24-pack with cutters is a possible choice for a small party or known classroom group. Its listing specifies 24 cans with cutters and ages three and up. It is a more substantial handout than a single sticker, but three packs are needed to cover 50 visitors; do that arithmetic before choosing it for a busy street.

Play-Doh contains wheat. Do not put it forward as an allergy-free alternative or assume that non-edible materials suit every recipient. For a mixed trick-or-treat crowd, offer a separate paper-based choice and let the caregiver choose. We have not tested this pack; review the current ingredients and age labeling.

Make a separate non-food bowl

FARE’s Teal Pumpkin Project encourages offering non-food treats in a separate bowl. That is a useful setup even if you also give out candy: label the choices, keep the packaging, and avoid describing any selection as universally safe.

Spend less without making the handout disappointing

  • Use one complete item per visitor instead of making elaborate bags. Bags, ribbon and several small fillers raise the real cost.
  • For coloring, make one compact activity packet. A box of 24 loose crayons is not 24 complete coloring sets unless you deliberately create single-crayon handouts.
  • Choose a year-round design when possible. Unused notebooks and stickers can become classroom rewards rather than next year’s Halloween storage.
  • If you expect a wide age range, offer two clearly separated choices. Skip small loose parts for young children and follow the packaging age guidance.

For a classroom party, trunk event or boo basket

Ask the organizer about materials and age restrictions before buying. Count children rather than guessing from the number of families; for a public event, ask for previous attendance instead of adding an arbitrary number of extra packs. A boo basket for one child needs a different budget from a bowl for 100 visitors.

For a larger event, pair the handout plan with our trunk-or-treat kit guide. If you are hosting at home, the Halloween kitchen guide helps keep serving space available.

The practical choice

For unknown visitors, start with an inexpensive paper-based option and clear labeling. For a small group aged three and up, the linked Play-Doh pack is worth comparing if ingredients and pack count fit. Buy for the actual number of children, not the largest piece-count badge.
