Before you buy a Breville Bambino Plus, price the whole morning routine. The machine is only part of the purchase. Your grinder, milk routine, counter space, and willingness to clean up determine whether it becomes a daily pleasure or an expensive ornament.
Our take: put it on your shortlist if you want to prepare your own espresso but would welcome help steaming milk. Budget for a separate grinder if you plan to grind whole beans. If you mainly drink a big mug of black coffee, start by asking whether you want espresso at all.
This is a researched buying guide, not a hands-on test. We checked Breville's documentation and the brushed-stainless-steel BES500BSS listing on October 13, 2026. The cover is an AI-generated coffee illustration, not a photograph of this machine.
What makes the Bambino Plus interesting?
The useful feature is automatic milk texturing: Breville lists three milk-temperature settings and three texture levels, with manual steaming available too. That makes this machine worth considering for someone who likes lattes but does not want every morning to begin with practicing steam-wand technique.
It still leaves you involved in preparing the coffee. There is no built-in grinder. You measure, load, and tamp the grounds; the machine has one- and two-cup controls. Think of it as help with parts of the process, rather than a push-button café that handles everything.
Breville says its ThermoJet heater reaches extraction temperature in three seconds. That is a heater-readiness claim, not a promise that your finished drink takes three seconds. Grinding, preparing the basket, brewing, steaming, and cleaning still take time. See the manufacturer's Bambino Plus specifications.

Budget for the setup you will actually use
Start with three lines on a piece of paper: equipment, ingredients, and upkeep. Put your total spending limit at the top before shopping for extras.
Equipment includes the machine and, if needed, an espresso-capable grinder. A scale can help you repeat a recipe. Leave room for both appliances and a place to work; a compact machine can still become part of a crowded coffee station. Measure the complete arrangement, including access for refilling water and emptying the tray.
Ingredients include beans and your preferred milk. Upkeep includes the cleaning supplies specified for the machine. A monthly budget should also allow for wasted coffee while you learn. It is easy to underestimate that first bag when every shot feels like an experiment.
Check the box contents before buying accessories. Breville currently lists a tamper, dosing tool, milk jug, single- and dual-wall baskets, and cleaning tools. You do not need to order a matching accessory collection on day one. Use the supplied setup first, then decide which specific inconvenience an extra purchase would solve.
Do you need a grinder immediately?
Breville's manual recommends dual-wall baskets for pre-ground coffee and single-wall baskets for freshly ground beans. Pre-ground coffee can therefore be a starting point, provided you use the appropriate basket. Confirm what your exact package includes.
If you want to adjust the grind yourself, make the grinder part of the initial decision. Compare the complete machine-plus-grinder cost with your budget, rather than discovering the second purchase after opening the first box.
There is also a preference question here: do you enjoy adjusting a recipe? Some people find that satisfying. Others want their coffee with the least possible thought. Neither approach is wrong, but buying equipment for an imaginary version of your morning is expensive.
Could it pay for itself?
Only count café purchases you would genuinely replace. Buying a machine and continuing the same café habit adds a new expense.
Here is a hypothetical example, not a product price quote or savings guarantee: suppose your complete setup costs $750, a café drink costs $5, and your home ingredients cost $1.50 per drink. The difference is $3.50. Dividing $750 by $3.50 gives roughly 215 replaced drinks to recover the equipment cost, before electricity, cleaning supplies, repairs, tax, and the value of your time.
At five replaced drinks a week, that is about 43 weeks; at two, about 108 weeks. Change those assumptions to match your actual purchases. Someone replacing inexpensive home-brewed coffee will get a very different answer.
Enjoyment can be a valid reason to buy it. You do not have to force a hobby purchase into a savings claim.
Automatic milk does not mean automatic cleanup
Breville instructs owners to wipe the steam wand after milk texturing and lower it so it can purge. Its manual also describes a cleaning-cycle alert after 200 extractions and a separate descaling procedure. Use the instructions supplied with your unit for the correct sequence and cleaning products. The Bambino Plus instruction manual is worth reading before buying.
Picture finishing your drink and immediately dealing with the used grounds, jug, wand, and tray. If that sounds like a manageable ritual, good. If you already resent washing your current coffee maker, convenience deserves more weight than another feature.
What should you check in owner feedback?
The listing we inspected showed 4.1 out of 5 stars from 2,421 ratings. Those figures can change and are not a laboratory reliability score. The visible owner comments included praise for drinks and size, alongside complaints about cleaning behavior and steaming interruptions.
Read both recent positive and critical reviews for the exact version. Look for details about the problem, how long the owner used the machine, and whether support resolved it. A single enthusiastic testimonial does not establish durability, and a single failure does not establish a failure rate. Check the seller's return terms and applicable manufacturer warranty before committing.
Is this the right purchase for you?
Choose the Bambino Plus if milk drinks are a regular pleasure, you want some hands-on control over espresso, and the complete setup fits your budget. Its automatic milk feature gives you a specific reason to consider it beyond its appearance.
Pause if you want beans-to-cup automation, dislike routine cleanup, or mostly need a pot of coffee for several people. The best purchase may be a different brewing format—or keeping the machine you already own.
If those tradeoffs fit your morning, check the Bambino Plus's current price and availability. We are linking to a buying option, not claiming a limited-time discount. Compare the final total, seller, condition, and return terms at checkout.
